Achieving your Goals

What is a goal?

A goal is an idea of a desirable or future result that people envision, plan, and commit to achieving. We commonly endeavour to reach goals over specific periods by setting deadlines. By setting a goal, you provide yourself with a clear direction and therefore have clarity on what you should prioritise so it can be obtained. Having goals is very important in enabling us to make progress in life. There is an acronym for goals that I created, which identifies essential factors that pave the way for us achieving our goals. GOALS means:

Grit

Grit is having passion and perseverance to continue a course of action for long-term and meaningful goals. It is the ability to persist in something you feel zealous about and endure when facing difficulties or obstacles. Grit is also about determination and insistence. It is evident how an individual sticks with it; to continue working hard even after experiencing setbacks, difficulties or failure.

“Every great story happened when someone decided not to give up.”Spryte Loriano

Organised

Being organised is paramount if you want to achieve goals, huge ones! To be organised means to be able to plan things carefully and have the ability to perform tasks in a structured manner. When an individual is organised, they have developed the skill to formulate a strategy and identify the key steps to get them from where they are to where they would like to be. When setting a new goal, always keep in mind the 5 P’s: prior preparation prevents poor performance!

“Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do.” –  Steve Jobs

Action

Action is the universal language that everyone understands. To make any progress and ultimately achieve your goals, there must be action. By action, I mean deliberate deeds done and acts committed to realising your dream or goal. With whatever you want to achieve in your life, know that you need to take daily steps to pursue accomplishment. Progress is one of humankind's greatest motivators, and our daily habits manifest that. So, forsake delay and divorce procrastination! Treat every day as a new life and live it to the full. Every morning you must decide if it will be day one or one day.

“Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned.” –  Peter Marshall

Loyal

One of the critical components to success is being loyal and fully committed to your goals. There will be many obstacles that may get in the way of your dreams, such as the opinions of others, failure, disappointments, people saying no, your emotions, your comfort zone, fear, your inner critic etc. When it is all said and done, one of the main factors that make individuals stick to and achieve their goals is to remain loyal to their goal, passion, purpose, or dream. See your goal as a baby that needs your careful and continuous attention for it to grow into a healthy and complete adult [place of completion]. No one else is responsible or accountable for your goal, although others may babysit them for a short period. You will have to get up and feed it early in the morning and look after it when it is sick [setbacks or disappointments]. Remain loyal to your goals, and in due season you shall receive your reward.

“There is nothing more satisfying then following your heart, sticking to dreams when failure slaps you in the face and creating a new you as you achieve success.” –  Ezra Voice of Reason

Sacrifice

To gain what you never had, you have to do what you’ve never done! This is where sacrifice comes in. Sacrifice is all about what it costs for you to achieve your goal. It comes in many shapes and forms, so you must be willing and ready to pay the price for success. What are you willing to give up so you can achieve your goal? What do you need to learn or unlearn? What habits are you committed to changing? Once you have made a decision, you need to stick with it through the pain of the process until you prosper!

“Sometimes the prize is not worth the costs. The means by which we achieve victory are as important as the victory itself.” –  Brandon Sanderson

Final Words

With whatever goals you have set for 2022, know that you will be unstoppable with grit, organisation, taking action, remaining loyal to your vision, and being willing to sacrifice who you are for what you will become!
